A mighty bang as never heard before
Just on eight bells and I am fast asleep;
So to the boat deck I must surely fly
Life jacket, torch, whistle, knife to hand
Two lifeboats, one already blown away
The other doomed; she hangs; a guy rope fouling
To the main deck I must go, and quick
to see if I can loose the offending rope
But there I find already ankle deep
the sea; we’re sinking fast It is too late
the rope to cut.
What now? no time to dwell no time to lose
But Taffy’s there. “A raft I’ve launched but quick
run fast, the foredeck, we can launch another”
But half way there beside the bridge alas
the bows rise up and now the deck’s too steep
There’s one thing only now that we can do
A leap of faith with hope that we survive.
Onto the bulwark we clamber, but Taffy says “Wait”
A few seconds later shouts “Jump” and off we go
Into the night with only sea below.
